Delineations I
The project by Helen-Maria Nugent and Jan Tichy, Delineations (2009), is itself an experiment with light and shadow in space, Delineations revisits László Moholy-Nagy’s own experiments with photography and projections.
In each of the installation’s four linked spaces viewers will experience moving light in space. Through precisely animated sequences of projections, the artists explore graphic abstraction, along with manipulated and constructed images. Then these are further refracted by the given architectural and inserted sculptural elements, and even spill out of rooms through punctures in the walls.
Light animates rhythm. Just as Moholy-Nagy’s films explored how it feels to look up, down, sideways in the world, so this maze-like space in downtown Chicago pares down experience so that a visitor’s awareness of vision, motion, and own body in space is heightened and connected.
